  TOLAS

TOLAS is an innovation in the field of Maritime Training. It is a training application which allows our pool of more than 7000 seafarers to access a comprehensive Body of Knowledge both at our world-wide offices and training center (On Land) and onboard ship (At Sea). This Body of Knowledge is available on the website training.fleetship.com of Fleet Management Training Institute (FMTI). This website is replicated on servers installed at various remote locations on land and sea. This E-Learning Management System along with entire network of servers and database is named TOLAS

Technical Information

In each of our offices and on each of our ships, we have installed a TOLAS server which contains a library of over 500 items of training material. A database contains full details of training material and crew.

The training material is uploaded on a main server in Mumbai. It is synchronized online overnight with satellite office servers in India and abroad. In this way the training material and training record is updated daily at all locations.

The TOLAS onboard server is a replication of the FMTI website. This pseudo-website is accessible from all the shipboard PCs connected via a hub. Apart from that a dedicated training computer is provided on the ship, which gives 24x7 access to crew for training. New material is sent to the ships by DVD or hard disk.

All training data is synchronized between ship and office by zipped xml files which automatically exchange between onboard TOLAS servers and the central office server. It happens through onboard communication computer over Inmarsat. Office personnel are able to see the training record and statistics almost real time. Individualized training records are permanently maintained on the server and gives the date, score and pass/ fail status of the trainee.

TOLAS contains training modules covering all aspects of shipboard operations. The training material in the form of:

Videos
Computer based tutorials
Presentations
Documentations

On basis of rank and type of ship, the in-built training manager program decides the ‘Required’ and ‘Recommended’ training modules for an individual. All ‘Required’ modules are followed by a Question and Answer (Q & A) session.

All training material are created and edited in-house at FMTI in Mumbai.

Major Benefits of TOLAS

Greatest innovation is that training experience onboard and ashore is indistinguishable.

Available to 4000 plus crew ‘Any Place, Any Pace, Anytime’ on 200 plus ships
Onboard training record is available to shore office almost real time
Body of knowledge on the onboard servers can be updated regularly by CD, DVD or hard disk
Training is customized as per rank and ship type
The training has moved away from the office hours and from the four walls of the training institute to the 24/7 world of the ship and allows crew to take training at his own initiative and pace

Summary

With TOLAS, we have become the first ship management company in the world to provide completely seamless and fully integrated ship to shore training.

As a responsible corporate entity we have always felt the urge to reach out to the new generation of cadets who will be the future of shipping industry, and to contribute to their all-round development. With the establishment of a TOLAS server and training stations at the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata, we have committed in a small way to our responsibility.
